December 2009:

Charltons attend Buckingham Palace Trade Fair

In December 2009, A J Charlton & Sons Ltd were invited to attend a the Royal Warrant Holders Trade Fair at Buckingham Palace.  The event was organized by The Royal Warrant Holders Association and was the very first of its kind.  There are over eight hundred Royal Warrant Holders nationally but only one hundred could attend the fair.  Charltons were delighted and honoured to be one of the hundred and those who attended represented a huge cross-section of trade and industry.  Other attendees including British Sugar, Jaguar Land Rover and Fortnum & Mason.

Michael Charlton the Royal Warrant Holders Trade Fair at Buckingham Palace

The location of the event was very special to say the least.  The surroundings were quite understandably inspiring.  Michael Charlton was on hand to discuss the latest  company and product developments with HM The Queen (obviously not the lady featured in the picture above).  Unfortunately Michael isn’t able to share the exact nature of the discussion, although I’m sure he would love to!

A J Charlton & Sons have supplied gates and fencing to the Sandringham Estate for many years and have been Royal Warrant Holders for over fifteen.  Royal Warrants are a mark of recognition to people or companies who have supplied goods or services for at least five years to HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales. In December 2009, A J Charlton & Sons were granted a further five year extension period through continued supply of gates and fencing to the Royal Household.

Only timber prepared correctly will reach the LONGLAST Usage Class 4 standard:
Species – all Charlton’s posts are Redwood as standard. Redwood is used for its suitability to accept treatment.
Drying – the treatment is absorbed and retained by naturally air drying the timber to 28% moisture content. The treatment penetrates through the sapwood to the heartwood and provides protection even when the timber opens up.
Preparation – layers of timber are separated by spacers to allow for consistent drying and treatment right through the pack.

Every LONGLAST product is end-tagged with a permanent branded timber tag to ensure effective in-stock presentation and the treatment batch number is listed on every pack to ensure traceability. Contact the sales office on 01373 812521.

The contractor responsible for the installation was Alastair Ulyet. Alastair used Charltons Redwood fence posts which were factory machined with v-notches to accept the arris rail.

Continuing the BBC theme, Michael Charlton was recently part of a regional BBC Radio discussion regarding the Royal Warrant. Charltons were established in 1903 and are only one of three companies in Somerset to hold the Royal Warrant. Charltons are proud to have supplied the Royal Households for nearly 20 years.

Post & Rail and Featherboard fencing materials are supplied in quantity to keep the festival goers within designated areas, while the woodchips are an emergency measure to keep the famous Glastonbury mud at bay. The slabwood is used in a variety of ingenious ways, from fences to benches as can be seen in the photographs.

It’s a tough job but someone must represent Charltons at the festival. That honour this year fell to a ‘shy’ Michael Charlton (top right) and IT Manager Greg Charlton aka Coco the Clown (top left).
