Machined Fence Posts
Recessed posts can be used with a standard 87 x 38mm rail which sits inside the recess. This allows the featheredge boards to be fitted onto the rail and the post, providing a strong fence and furthermore the post is hidden behind the boards.
For slightly sloping situations the morticed post is a better option, used with a scarfed arris rail (see picture – include picture on page 3 of fencing brochure). The scarfed end of the arris rail fits snugly into the mortice yet offers some play to account for sloping land.
The v-notched post used with a standard arris rail also allows the post to be hidden by the featheredge boards and provides a strong and secure fence. The sloping arris rail makes it much more difficult to climb over the fence and is therefore considered to be more secure than the recessed post and standard rail. The BBC Gardeners World featheredge fence was supplied by Charltons and features posts with v-notches.
Machined fence posts are featured on the fencing pages, select 'Fencing' in the side menu on the left.
